I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU
Stevie Wonder
Song has been stuck in my head for two weeks. I’ll never quite shake my cringe at the title. Inside every romantic (this one anyway) there’s a cynic. Until five minutes ago I wasn’t that big on the rest of the lyrics either. But turns out they’re solid Tin Pan Alley classic. Good lyrics.
But what makes the song, for me, is three things: The earworm bass riff. I hear it as I write this, of course. How can something so simple be so fetching? Of course, those are the very things that are.
The second thing, bringing to mind the expression “he could sing the phone book,” is Stevie’s voice. To me, one of the very greatest voices ever. Pure music. Just to hear him sing “no Libra sun.” (Until today I had no idea what he was saying! WTF? Libra sun? But it always grabbed me.)
And then….the melody. Stevie is such a great melody writer. Up there with Lennon and McCartney. (Yeah yeah yeah…maybe there are dozens or scores of others…let me have my fun.)
Almost all of his melodies could stand alone with no words.
Check out Stevie’s Tin Pan Alley classic:
No New Year’s Day to celebrate
No chocolate covered candy hearts to give away
No first of spring, no song to sing
In fact, here’s just another ordinary day
No April rain, no flowers bloom
No wedding Saturday within the month of June
But what it is, is something true
Made up of these three words that I must say to you
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
No summer’s high, no warm July
No harvest moon to light one tender August night
No autumn breeze, no falling leaves
Not even time for birds to fly to southern skies
No Libra sun, no Halloween
No giving thanks to all the Christmas joy you bring
But what it is, though old, so new
To fill your heart like no three words could ever do
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care, I do
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart
Of my heart
Of my heart (baby, of my heart)
